Dallas, One of America's Fastest Growing Cities
Home to nearly 1.2 million people, Dallas is the third largest city in Texas and one of the fastest growing cities at both state and national levels. The city is the economic hub of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington Metropolitan area (also known as Metroplex) which encompasses 12 counties and is sixth strongest economy in the United States. In 2010, the Metroplex area had a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of over $374 billion.
Dallas established itself as one of the leading economies in Texas in less than five decades since its foundation in 1841. By the end of the century, the city developed into the regional center for economic activity and retained its leadership as the region's economic hub to the present-day. Being home to twelve Fortune 500 companies within the city limits, Dallas is only behind New York and Houston.
Growth in size, economy and importance since the early 20th century made Dallas an attractive place to live and work. Over the 20th century, predominantly white population became increasingly diversified and today, White Americans account for slightly above 50 percent of the city's population. Black or African Americans make up about a quarter of Dallas' residents, followed by Asian Americans (3.3 percent), and American Indians and Alaska Natives (1.2 percent). Over 40 percent of residents are Hispanics/Latinos. People of Mexican descent form the largest Hispanic/Latino group and account for nearly 37 percent of the total Hispanic/Latino population in the city.
English is spoken at home as the only language by nearly 58 percent of residents, while over 42 percent of population speaks other than English as a primary language. The majority of non-English speaking residents speak Spanish (37 percent of the total city population), followed by Asian languages (2 percent) and other Indo-European languages (1.7 percent).
