Saint Louis, The Gateway to the West

Once the fourth largest city in the United States, Saint Louis is today in the 58th place due to population decline after the mid-20th century. Since the turn of the century, however, the city's population began to rise again also due to revitalization efforts for which it won the World Leadership Award.

The Gateway to the West, as Saint Louis is also referred to due to its role during the westward expansion, is home to about 318,000 people, with Black or African Americans forming nearly one half of the city's population. White Americans account for nearly 44 percent, followed by Asian Americans (almost 3 percent) and American Indians and Alaska Natives (0.3 percent). Saint Louis is also home to a large number of residents of Italian descent. Their ancestors arrived during the 19th century along a large group of other European immigrants, mainly from Germany, Ireland and Bohemia (today's Czech Republic).

Vietnamese are the largest single ethnic group of Asian ancestry (approximately 0.9 percent), followed by Chinese (slightly above 0.5 percent). Hispanics/Latinos account for 3.5 percent of the city's population, with the residents of Mexican descent forming the largest group. They account for 2.2 percent of the total population.

Over 90 percent of Saint Louis' residents speak English as a primary language. At 2.9 percent, Spanish is the most commonly spoken non-English language, followed by Bosnian, Vietnamese, African languages, Chinese and French. However, since the Greater St. Louis is home to many multinational corporations including nine Fortune 500 companies, the city's business and private life are getting linguistically more diverse.
