Washington, the Center of the Federal Government and Home to the Largest Number of International Organizations

Founded in 1791, Washington, D.C. was created to serve as the nation's capital. Ever since it has been home to all branches of the federal government, including the President, Congress and Supreme Court. As the capital of the United States, Washington is also home to over 170 foreign embassies and the largest number of international organizations of all US cities, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the Organization of American States, to mention only a few. Many residents are therefore working for the governmental agencies and related organizations, while many are also employed by the foreign diplomatic corps although the nation's capital has a rapidly growing industry that is not related to government or diplomacy.

According to the 2012 Census Bureau estimations, Washington has a population of over 630,000. Black or African American residents make up slightly more than 50 percent of Washington's population, followed by White (nearly 43 percent), Asian (3.8 percent), and Native American and Pacific Islander (0.8 percent). Hispanics/Latinos of any race account for nearly 10 percent of the total population.

The Census Bureau data also reveal that 85 percent of Washington's residents speak English as the only language at home. At 7.1 percent, Spanish is the most commonly spoken non-English language, followed by other Indo-European (4.1 percent) and Asian (1.7 percent) languages. Despite the overwhelming majority of residents speaking English as a primary language and "very well" by those who speak other than English at home, there is a continuous increase in demand for services of our Washington-based translators and interpreters for both personal and business reasons.
