Which Spanish? It Matters... a Lot!

To provide maximum convenience and deliver translated documents in the shortest time possible, Translators USA enables clients to upload documents that need to be translated to our Online Order Form. However, when selecting the language into which the documents need to be translated, our clients sometimes forget to further specify their requirements. For example, it is very important for us to know whether the documents need to be translated into European (also known as Peninsular) Spanish or American Spanish. We never begin with translation until we make sure that we fully understand our clients' needs but if we can't contact them immediately, this can lead to unnecessary delays in turnaround time.

The Importance of Language Variances for Quality Translation

Just like there are notable differences between British English and American English, there are some differences between European Spanish and American Spanish as well. These differences don't cause any difficulties in communication between Spanish speakers from Europe and America with the exception of perhaps some dialects and regional accents. However, under the influence of indigenous languages, geographical distance and the tendency of languages to change over time, speakers of American Spanish use some distinctively "American Spanish" words, while retaining some expressions that went out of use or are considered outdated in Europe, especially when it comes to colloquial expressions and words for everyday items.

A translation into the "wrong" variance of Spanish will largely be understood by all Spanish speakers no matter if they are living in Europe or America, just like Americans don't have any difficulties understanding British English and vice versa. But due to the above mentioned differences, a distinctively "American Spanish" words and expressions won't sound right to speakers of Peninsular Spanish and vice versa. And if the document is of technical nature, the "wrong" language variance may make it sound unprofessional. Translation into the "wrong" variance is also of major concern for documents intended for marketing as they depend heavily on the use of language that appeals to the target audience. An expression that is popular in Mexico for instance may fail to attract attention and stimulate the desired response in Spain's audience. Into which Spanish variance the text is translated therefore matters ... a lot!
