The Demand for Medical Transcriptionists in the U.S. Projected to Grow

While striving to provide the best rates possible, we at Translators USA never cut corners when it comes to quality and we never outsource English medical transcriptions overseas. In our opinion, the risks are simply too high. And based on the projected growth of the demand for medical transcriptionists (MTs) in the U.S., we believe that healthcare providers share our reservations about outsourcing of medical transcription as well.

Employment of MTs Projected to Grow 8% in 2012-2022

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of MTs will grow 8% between 2012 and 2022. This is a lot less than the projected growth for other healthcare support occupations which are expected to grow as much as 23% in the same time period. But it is similar to the average for all occupations combined.

The BLS About the Influence of Speech Recognition Software and Outsourcing

The federal agency notes that speech recognition software and other advances in the technology have had a major influence on transcription. Although they didn't eliminate the need for human transcriptionists, they made their work more effective. The BLS believes that this affects the demand for MTs because technological advancements enable an MT to work faster and handle more transcriptions within the same time period.

Outsourcing is another factor which according to the BLS negatively affects the demand for MTs within the United States. But the agency also notes that while many healthcare providers are choosing to outsource transcription overseas to reduce the costs, this practice is raising concerns about privacy and security of patient information. The BLS thus concludes that MTs within the United States don't need to worry about losing their jobs to their overseas colleagues.

The BLS' Projections Perhaps Too Modest

We largely agree with the BLS when it comes to both speech recognition software and outsourcing but we believe that the agency is perhaps too optimistic about the progress of technology. Likewise, we believe that the BLS missed one very important thing about outsourcing, which in our opinion, will play an important role in the demand for US-based MTs as well: quality.

We at Translators USA never outsource medical transcriptions (or other English transcriptions) not only because we are concerned about confidentiality and security of patient information. The second reason why we don't outsource is because we strongly believe that it poses a high risk of errors, even if the transcription is done by a qualified MT. This is due to the fact that MTs overseas either lack the language proficiency or/and aren't familiar with the US-based MDs colloquial expressions and jargon nor names of places, companies and brands.
