Planning Your Multilingual Event – How Many Interpreters

In addition to providing interpreting services for all kinds of multilingual events, we at Translators USA are also happy to help our clients make the necessary plans and arrangements to turn their conference, business meeting, convention or any other event requiring interpretation into a success. Working in the interpreting industry for many years, we know that planning a multilingual event is everything but easy considering that you need to think about a myriad of things to make sure that everything runs smoothly.

When it comes to interpreters, it is our job to make sure that everything runs smoothly. All our language specialists are fully qualified and experienced professionals who can successfully handle most types of multilingual events. We will also help you select the ideal number of interpreters based on:

  • The Number of Languages

Obviously, the more languages the speech needs to be converted into, the more interpreters will be needed. Having one interpreter per language, however, usually isn't enough. Typically, a team of at least two interpreters should be hired per language. Therefore, if you need interpretation for 3 languages, you will probably need at least 6 interpreters.

  • Duration of the Event

In order to provide accurate and meaningful interpretation, language specialists have to be maximally concentrated. Since the level of concentration required to provide the highest quality interpretation can be kept only for a limited amount of time, it is of utmost importance for the interpreters to be provided with a break to rest in between interpretations. Ideally, interpreters should switch after 30 minutes and interpret no more than 6 hours a day with at least 1 ½ hour break after the first 3 hours.

  • Type of Interpretation

The majority of our clients prefer simultaneous interpretation because it allows the event to run uninterruptedly as opposed to consecutive interpretation that extends the duration of the event at least to twice as long as it would last without interpretation. And unlike whisper interpreters who can provide translation to at most two people, their simultaneous colleagues can provide interpretation to all event participants that need one. The number of interpreters needed therefore also depends greatly on the selected type of interpretation.

  • Venue and Nature of the Event

Does the venue have interpretation booths and all the necessary equipment already installed? If not, is there room (and time) to have it installed? Does the event foresee large audience, movement (e.g. factory tour) or concurrent sessions? Sometimes, it is the venue and nature of the event that determine the type of interpretation and subsequently, the number of interpreters needed.
