Hiring Interpreters – The Price Factor

While striving to provide the highest quality interpreting services, Translators USA also strives to provide the best pricing possible. We are aware that our clients are not seeking for the lowest rates possible because they don't want to pay but because they have to. Holding a multilingual event is quite expensive, especially if you have to hire a venue, cover the speakers' expenses, catering, etc. Skilled, experienced and knowledgeable interpreters aren't cheap but in comparison to the other costs related to holding a multilingual event, they are not that expensive.

Factors That Play the Key Role in Pricing

How much you will be charged for interpreting services depends greatly on several factors. Above all, it depends on:

  • The number of language combinations. Obviously, the more language combinations you need to cover, the more interpreters you will need – at least two per language pair. Why two? Because interpreters always work in pairs to be able to take turns every 30 minutes and maintain the highest level concentration which is crucial to provide the highest quality service.
  • Duration of your event. Interpreters shouldn't work longer than 6 hours a day and should be provided with at least 90 minute break after the first 3 hours. They are more than happy to stay longer if necessary but in this case, you will need a larger team of interpreters which will obviously increase the cost of interpreting services.
  • Availability of locally-based interpreters. If you want to keep the cost of interpreting services down without giving up the quality, you should seek for locally-based interpreters. Why? Because if flown in from elsewhere, you will also be charged travel days allowance and daily subsistence allowance. Locally-based interpreters, on the other hand, will charge you only the daily interpretation fee.
  • Last minute arrangements/changes. It is highly important to be aware that interpreting services are highly sought after. As a result, finding locally-based interpreters in the last minute can be very challenging. Therefore, last minute arrangements/changes can considerably increase the overall cost of interpreting services because the language specialists may need to be flown in which as explained earlier, automatically increases the cost.

Our Advice

You are highly recommended not to try to cut the cost of interpreting services by limiting the number of interpreters. Providing the highest quality interpretation requires the highest level of concentration. Therefore, it is crucial for the interpreters to be able to take turns every 30 minutes and be provided with a break in between the sessions. Otherwise, the quality of their service will begin to drop which may lead to errors and potentially serious misunderstandings. Likewise, you are advised not to utilize the "emergency" solutions such as relay interpreting to avoid having interpreters flown in. Relay interpreting is an option when interpreters for the target language combination are unavailable but it should be used as the last resort because it increases the risk of misinterpreting as the speech is interpreted twice before reaching the listeners.
