When Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi launched their $1 billion corporate venture capital fund on January 9 at CES 2018, Translators USA was there to help make history. More to the point, we were there to make sure the history being made was understood in French and Japanese, the native tongues of the carmakers Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.

A Global Press Conference Needed in Multiple Languages
The landmark event was held in Las Vegas on January 9, 2018 in conjunction with the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a global stage for unveiling cutting-edge breakthroughs in technology. The event is attended by the world’s largest technology companies, as well as more traditional Fortune 500 Companies with new tech initiatives. At the event, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance CEO Carlos Ghosn announced their new venture fund will invest up to $1 billion in electric vehicles, autonomous systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other mobility technology. "Our open innovation approach will allow us to invest and collaborate with start-up companies and technology entrepreneurs, who will benefit from the global scale of the Alliance," said Ghosn.
Getting that precise message across for one the world’s largest carmakers required some serious skill and handling. Translators USA was tapped to lead interpreting for the event by Michelle M. Suzuki of MSC Public Relations. While the event had a clear agenda and speaker lineup, exactly how our team would interpret their message from English to French and Japanese was another question.

Designing the right interpreting technologies for the event
Working directly with the event team at MSC Public Relations, we shifted fluidly between a few different interpreting technologies as the room layout changed. The first option we explored was blocking off a part of the room, so the interpreters would not be seen and use monitors for the interpreters to see the speaker. (No radios needed.) The next option was to use the radios, 20 receivers (10 in French, 10 in Japanese).
The winning solution
The end result? In the end, the event team opted for 2-way English-to-French-to-Japanese transmitters. As Translators USA founder Danny Goossens explains, “We set up the whole system with radio transmission and we made some last-minute adjustments to the setup, as they required. The interpreting for the event was perfection in every detail. Working side-by-side with the event team, we designed the perfect system for the press conference. We have our masterful team of interpreters to thank as well. The team at Renault immediately thanked us after the successful completion of the event.”
