For Translators USA, clients' needs and wishes always come first. But while we always respect our clients' wishes and if necessary, go an extra mile to accommodate their needs perfectly, we also feel obliged to recommend them to reconsider their choices if these can affect the outcome of their event. From our experience, many event planners are under the influence of several myths that surround interpreting and have the potential to cause a serious damage. And one of such myths is that one language requires one interpreter.

One Language Requires at Least Two Interpreters

Many clients who haven't worked with interpreters before are surprised to hear that they will need to hire at least two interpreters per language. This is because they aren't aware how mentally intensive interpreting is and the level of concentration it requires no matter if provided simultaneously or consecutively. Even the most skilled, experienced and knowledgeable interpreters can keep the highest level of concentration only for a limited amount of time. If they are forced to interpret over their limits, there is a high risk that quality of their interpretation will begin to drop no matter how professional and experienced they are.

In order to provide the highest quality interpretation from the beginning to the very end of the event, interpreters typically work in pairs and take turns every 20 to 30 minutes. Smaller meetings of short duration can be handled by a single interpreter but any event that is expected to last close to an hour or longer requires at least two interpreters due to the above mentioned reasons.

When Even Two Interpreters per Language Aren't Enough

To the surprise of many, sometimes even two interpreters per language aren't enough. As mentioned earlier, interpreters should take turns every 20 to 30 minutes but due to the intensive nature of the profession, they shouldn't interpret more than two 3-hour sessions per day. In addition, they should be provided with a break of at least 90 minutes after the first 3-hour session. Conferences, seminars, conventions and other bilingual and multilingual events that don't foresee a longer break after 3 hours therefore need more interpreters per language. The same counts for events with concurrent sessions in multiple rooms.
