An Overview of Different Types of Interpreting

Translators USA clients can choose between all the main types of interpreting:

- Simultaneous interpreting

Its main advantage is that the conversion from the source into the target language takes place in real time (with a delay of a few seconds, to be more precise) without interrupting the speaker regardless of how many languages the source language has to be translated into. Therefore, it is the preferred mode of interpreting for events with large audience or/and audiences requiring interpretation into multiple languages. Simultaneous interpreting requires specialized equipment and at least two interpreters per language pair.

- Consecutive interpreting

This type of interpreting is most appropriate for smaller meetings and events requiring interpretation into a single language. Unlike simultaneous interpreting, consecutive interpreting doesn't require any special equipment. But since the interpretation is rendered only when the speaker finishes their statement or in intervals during presentation (usually, after a few sentences), consecutive interpreting significantly prolongs the duration of the event.

- Whisper interpreting

Also known as chuchotage, whisper interpreting is a subtype of simultaneous interpreting. An interpreter sitting or standing close by to a person requiring translation converts source language into native or preferred language in real time using low voice in order to avoid distracting the speaker and other event participants. Therefore, no equipment is needed in whisper interpreting. However, a single interpreter can provide translation to at most two individuals. As a result, whisper interpreting is appropriate only for small meetings, informal events such as working dinners and meetings involving movement, for example factory tours.

- Phone interpreting

Like its name suggests, this type of interpreting takes place over the phone which is why it is crucial to ensure the highest quality phone connection. It is useful for both in-person meetings and phone conversations between individuals who don't speak a common language. Phone interpreting is usually done consecutively which means that the interpreter waits for the speaker to finish before rendering the translation. Simultaneous phone interpreting is possible as well but in this case, specialized equipment is needed.
